A new political spot featuring Medal of Honor recipient Bennie Adkins promoting incumbent Rep. Mike Rogers’ (R-Saks) reelection candidacy has hit the airwaves and touts the U.S. representative for Alabama’s 3rd congressional district for his commitment to military veterans.

Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins, currently an Opelika resident, was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2014 for distinguishing himself during “38 hours of close-combat fighting and 48-hours of escape and evasion against enemy forces, March 9-12, 1966” while serving in Vietnam.

As Adkins explains in the 30-second spot, Rogers worked in the year leading up to Adkins’ award to shepherd legislation through Congress that waived the time requirement.

“I’m Bennie G. Adkins, and I had the pleasure of serving three tours in Vietnam,” he says. “Seventeen special forces there — all 17 were wounded. Five paid the ultimate price. I was recommended for the Medal of Honor. Mike Rogers was a catalyst in getting this super honor, and very humbling, also. Mike Rogers takes care of veterans.”

The spot is already on air in the Montgomery and Columbus, GA designated market areas as Rogers faces Democratic congressional nominee Mallory Hagan, a former Miss New York and Miss America, in next month’s general election.
