Early Saturday morning, President Donald Trump reiterated his support for former Auburn head football coach Tommy Tuberville, the candidate he endorsed in Tuesday’s contest for Alabama’s GOP U.S. Senate nomination.

Tuberville faces former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who served as Trump’s first attorney general.

Trump made his thoughts known on Twitter, where he called Tuberville a “winner” and Sessions a “disaster.”

Shortly thereafter, Sessions responded with a tweet of his own.

Recent polling has shown Tuberville with an edge headed into Tuesday’s runoff election. However, prognosticators say many unknowns surround the Tuesday election given questions about turnout amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The winner in Tuesday’s race faces incumbent U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) in November.
