What has been deemed as one of the more controversial pieces of legislation thus far this quadrennium has been HB 2, which is anti-rioting legislation brought by State Rep. Allen Treadaway (R-Morris).
Treadaway’s bill had made it to Thursday’s agenda and was set to be under consideration for a floor vote. However, Democrats threatened to filibuster to delay its passage, and the bill was pulled with the promise of being brought up again later in the session.
House Democrats maintain the bill would chill free speech and have vowed to oppose the bill vehemently.
During an appearance on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show,” Treadaway discussed the merits of the legislation and the hurdles that it has faced.
However, he also explained how the bill would apply to the so-called Freedom Convoy truck protests in Canada and along the U.S.-Canadian border if similar protests were to occur in Alabama and this law was in effect.
“If you’re shutting down an Interstate under this law, or a main throughway — a state highway, it will be illegal,” he said. “I don’t care what the cause is. It would be illegal. Do not shut them down.”
