Now what? That’s a question from those waiting to see how the Alabama Legislature will respond to a three-judge federal court panel rejecting the congressional maps passed into law by the legislature during a special session last year.

State Senate Majority Leader Clay Scofield (R-Guntersville) downplayed the possibility of immediate from Goat Hill on the heels of the ruling during an appearance on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5 on Friday.

The Marshall County lawmaker acknowledged the disagreement with the court ruling and said the legislature would like to wait to see the judicial process play out.

“Obviously, we disagree with the court’s ruling,” he said. “The attorney general, Steve Marshall — we have appealed to the 11th Circuit, as well as to the Supreme Court of the United States. We believe that we looked at the guidelines and drew these maps off the guidelines within the confines of the law. We believe that our appeals would hopefully be successful. Obviously, we are watching it very closely, and we are going to keep our options open on what we need to do.”

“We’re going to let the court process play out and go from there,” Scofield added. “Whatever yields, then we’ll do our job.”
