Earlier this week, State Auditor Jim Zeigler announced he was abandoning his bid for governor to seek Alabama’s open secretary of state seat currently occupied by term-limited John Merrill.
On Friday, Zeigler’s campaign released internal polling showing him up on the field, including State Rep. Wes Allen (R-Troy), Madison County GOP activist Chris Horn and former Alabama Secretary of State’s Office employee Ed Packard.
The poll, conducted on January 17 by Wave Consulting with a sample size of 1,213 phone respondents from across Alabama and a margin of error for total respondents +/- 3.2%, shows Zeigler up on the field by 20 points with nearly half of the respondents undecided.
Wes Allen: 11.10%
Chris Horn: 3.10%
Ed Packard: 4.50%
Jim Zeigler: 31.40%
Undecided: 49.90%
The survey also showed Zeigler up on the field of candidates for Public Service Commission, place 1, over incumbent Jeremy Oden.

As of press time, only Allen, Packard and Zeigler have qualified for the secretary of state race.
Republicans will have an opportunity to choose their preference for the general election ballot on May 24.
