With 33 days to go until Republican voters head to the polls to decide who will represent the GOP on the November ballot to face incumbent U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook), former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is keeping the race close in the southern part of the state, according to a recent poll commissioned by the Alabama Forestry Association (AFA).

According to the AFA, the poll “confirms” Sessions is closing a gap with former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville.

The survey, conducted May 21-27 with 705 likely GOP voters via live phone calls and of only the First and Second Congressional District, the southwestern and southeastern portions of the state respectively, shows a statistical dead heat.

The poll conducted by Public Insight Research showed both Sessions and Tuberville earning 41.99% of the vote and 16% undecided on the ballot test portion of the survey. When broken down by each congressional district, Sessions leads Tuberville 45.2% to 39.6% in the First Congressional District, while Tuberville has a 44.4% to 38.75% in the Second Congressional District.

A release from the AFA that accompanied the survey says the poll validates the findings of an internal poll released by the Sessions campaign earlier in the week, showing a six-point gap statewide between Sessions and Tuberville for the July 14 contest.

AFA also predicts “extremely low turnout” for the runoff, which it says could be to Sessions’ advantage.

Back in March following the Republican primary, AFA gave its endorsement to Sessions over Tuberville.
