On Monday, U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to protest an effort underway led by congressional Democrats to expand background checks on gun purchases.
According to the Coffee County Republican, if Democrats are successful in their bid, it could increase the waiting period associated with the background check from three days to indefinitely.
During an interview with Mobile radio’s FM Talk 106.5 on Tuesday, Moore warned the law could have consequences for those loaning a firearm and vowed to continue to fight against such assaults on the Second Amendment.
“They’re trying to extend the universal background checks, you know,” he said. “We all understand there is a current three-day waiting period. Everybody goes through a background check that buys a gun, but they want the federal government now to extend that period, and it can be indefinitely. So, we know the speed of government when they need to be doing the right thing is rather slow. As a law-abiding citizen, if you go down, they want to extend that background check and the waiting period. It’s going to prevent a lot of law-abiding citizens from the opportunity of going down and buying a gun — especially in an emergency situation. It doesn’t even allow us to loan guns now. There’s a process where we can’t transfer the ownership of a gun or loaning a gun. I was speaking on the floor last night about it. And my concern is, you know, my son, some of his buddies — he was home from school this weekend, and they wanted to shoot skeet.”
“I loaned one of those young men my gun,” Moore continued. “This law will make me a criminal doing that. If I loan him a gun to go hunting, shoot skeet, or whatever the case may be, basically, it would allow me to serve one year in prison and a $100,000 fine if I was prosecuted and convicted. So, this is crazy what they’re trying to do to our country, and we’re going to continue to fight this. But concerning times for our nation and we certainly need the majority in 2022. The Republicans must take the majority. Nancy Pelosi no longer needs the gavel.”
