Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Katie Britt spoke out to protect female athletes with so-called transgender bans, which she argued preserve fairness and safety for women participating in sports.
Britt explained to Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show” on Thursday the importance of maintaining a fair standard for women as it pertained to their development.
“This boils down to safety and fairness,” she said. “You look at what we’re seeing occur in the country right now. And again, I think we have to back up and think how did we get here? For years, we had men and women across this country fighting for Title IX, fighting to make sure we had something in place to protect female athletes and give them the opportunity and the right to compete fairly.”
Britt continued, “Throughout that entire dialogue, you had consistency with regards to people bringing up the science — and saying, ‘Look, if you look at men, the differences in men and women, the differences in their muscle structure and their bone structure and the fact that they have more capability — what men do with the capacity of their lungs and larger hearts. And knowing, if women were ever going to get the opportunity to build teams, to build confidence, to learn discipline, to be a part of something bigger than themselves — we have seen across the country, time and time again, that opportunity to compete makes them a better version of themselves. It gives them the leadership skills. It gives them determination. It helps them fight through adversity so we have true leaders across the spectrum, whether it is in our schools, in our boardrooms, in politics or wherever it may be — the lessons they learn in those are the ones that are life-changing.”
The Enterprise native referenced her daughter’s participation in athletics and denied her sentiment had anything to do with “demonizing transgender children.”
“This is about fairness,” Britt added. “It is about safety. As a mama, a grown woman who is growing and learning every single day. You know, my daughter plays soccer. She plays volleyball. She plays basketball. And watching her on that court and watching her have that opportunity to grow, learn, and to strive for success is something that is so important and that is worth protecting.
“This is not about demonizing transgender children,” she continued. “They are children of God and have and deserve our love. This is about fighting for what is right and fighting for the opportunity to compete and to be safe and to have success in the future.”
