Del Marsh on 2020 U.S. Senate run: ‘I’m probably as qualified as anybody to consider it’

On Friday’s broadcast of Alabama Public Television’s “Capitol Journal,” State Senate Pro Tem Del Marsh (R-Anniston) acknowledged his interest in a run for the U.S. Senate in 2020.

As a candidate, Marsh would be vying for the Republican nomination in a race that would likely pit him against incumbent Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook).

Marsh told “Capitol Journal” host Don Dailey he viewed himself as “qualified as anybody,” noting he was aware of some of the other possible 2020 contenders.

“The Senate thing is something – yes, I’m looking at,” Marsh said. “I really believe the Alabama Senate seat will be held by a Republican in 2020. I’ve heard some names out there. And I think I’m probably as qualified as anybody to consider it. But my family and I have to make that decision, ultimately. And I’ve got to make the decision myself that it would be the best thing for me and for the state if I were to take that move.”

Marsh also responded to the suggestion from State Auditor Jim Zeigler that he should not seek the U.S. Senate seat given the position of Senate president makes him one of the most powerful officeholders in the state of Alabama.

“I appreciate my position with the state,” he replied. “It is a very powerful position. I think I’m very careful how I handle my position. We don’t strong-arm. We do things that we think is best for the body and getting things done. At the same time, I guess where my advantage is, as serving as pro-tem, the leader of the Senate, I understand the process very well and would understand the process very well in Washington, as well.”

“I’ve got to ask myself – is someone else looking at this? Who can best serve the state and get the job done? And I’ve got to ask myself: Where am I most valuable in that respect?” Marsh added. “And the decision has to made, but I’ve got time to make that decision.”
