AL-01 GOP hopeful Jerry Carl urges Alabama AG Steve Marshall to sue China over coronavirus

As election politics have taken a back seat as Alabama grapples with the coronavirus pandemic, Mobile County Commissioner Jerry Carl, a candidate for the Republican nomination in Alabama’s First Congressional District election, is using his campaign platform to urge action against China.

In a letter released to the public on Monday, Carl called on Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall to sue China for “Alabama citizens’ loss of life, human suffering, and economic turmoil.”

“With the deepest respect, I call upon your office to join other states within our country in bringing litigation against the Chinese government seeking damages for Alabama citizens’ loss of life, human suffering, and economic turmoil, which has devastated our state, and our country due to the Chinese government’s purposeful misinformation related to the coronavirus,” Carl wrote.

“For months, Chinese officials failed to take even basic steps to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus,” he added. “Despite knowing the risks of human-to-human transmission of the disease months ago, Chinese officials continued hosting large gatherings of people. They have also silenced medical professionals who have shared information pertaining to the virus. Furthermore, it is believed that China was even hoarding Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) while they were spreading misinformation about the number of confirmed coronavirus cases and coronavirus deaths. The United States has been directly impacted by China’s lies, deceit, and poor handling of the coronavirus pandemic.”

If Marshall were to follow through on Carl’s request, Alabama would be the third state to sue the Chinese government, following Mississippi and Missouri.

Carl faces former Alabama State Sen. Bill Hightower (R-Mobile) on July 14 to determine who will represent the Republican Party on the November ballot for the seat presently occupied by U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Fairhope).
