Around 91 residents have been evacuated from the Benny G. Adkins Veterans Home in Enterprise after a fire broke out in the building around 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The state-of-the-art facility was opened just months ago.
According to the Enterprise Fire Department, firefighters responded to the scene and began to cut into the roof to stop the spread. Due to the complex construction design, fire crews worked through the night to control and isolate the fire, preventing it from spreading further.
According to WDHN, first responders have said that as of 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning, the fire was contained to the exterior roof of the building.
No injuries have been reported, and all residents have been transported to Enterprise Health and Rehab.
First Responders from Dothan, Opp, Troy, New Brockton, Elba, and Ariton were on scene to provide mutual aid. Fire coverage was provided by surrounding departments.
U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and vocal advocate for those who have served, asked for prayers for those affected as solutions are identified.

Enterprise native U.S. Senator Katie Britt praised rescue workers and the local community for assisting the displaced veterans.
“I’m incredibly grateful to the brave first responders from across the Wiregrass who came together and worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of the residents at the Benny G. Adkins Veterans Home in my hometown of Enterprise,” said Britt (R-Montgomery).
“As local officials work to identify the cause of the fire, my family and I continue to pray for the veterans who were displaced as a result of this unfortunate incident. The Enterprise community is one of unselfish service and hospitality, and I’m glad to hear efforts are already underway to help our veterans receive the care and support they need during this time.”
