DOTHAN — Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Katie Britt will have to have a strong showing in the Wiregrass on May 24 to move on to the next round of the race for Alabama’s U.S. Senate seat up in November.
She looks to be on track based on the crowd she drew Tuesday night at a campaign stop in the Circle City.
Much like many Republican candidates in this election cycle, Britt took aim at Democrats in charge in Washington, D.C., including President Joe Biden.
Britt pointed out how a typical campaign stump speech would be repetitive under normal circumstances and only focus on three or five issues. However, she said under Biden, there are far more concerns.
“Typically, in a political campaign, you would get real bored at the speeches because there’s like three things people talk about, maybe five,” she said. “Unfortunately for us, right now, every single thing in this country under Joe Biden is moving in the wrong direction. It does not matter if you’re talking about the failure at the border if we’re talking about failure abroad or here at home — we are weaker and more vulnerable as a nation every day that he is president.”
Britt pointed to the increases in encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border as one of the Biden administration’s shortcomings and suggested a return to the last administration’s approach would be appropriate.
“And so folks, if you just take a look, take a step back — you can start with what’s happening on the border,” Britt continued. “And I told people, I don’t care what side of the political aisle you’re on, the numbers don’t lie. So in May, we were up 675% when it came to encounters. In June, we were up 471%. In July, we had 213,000 encounters at the border. You go into August — 210,000 encounters. September — 192,000 encounters. October, we were up 128[%] year over year. November — 300% year over year. And December — 176,000 encounters.”
“Folks, I have met with our border patrol,” she added. “I have talked with our law enforcement officers, and they say the number of men, women and children trafficked is disgusting. The amount of drugs coming over is disgusting. I mean, we must seal and secure our border. We must finish the wall. We must return to the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy and the public charge. This is not just about national security. It is also ending that humanitarian crisis that happens there every single day.”
