Ivey orders flags lowered to half-staff for fallen Sheffield Police officer

On Saturday, the Sheffield Police Department announced Sgt. Nick Risner, one of two officers shot while on duty a day earlier, had died from those injuries.

According to reports, Risner had been on the force for nine years.

Gov. Kay Ivey offered her condolences and said flags would be lowered to half-staff on the day of Risner’s interment, which would be announced at a later date.

“Our state is devastated by the tragic death of Sheffield Police Sgt. James Nicholas ‘Nick’ Risner, who succumbed to his injuries this morning after being shot multiple times in the line of duty yesterday afternoon in Muscle Shoals,” Ivey said in her flag memo. “Let us remember the life and service of Sgt. Risner, whose sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

The suspect in the shooting is Brian Lansing Martin, a 41-year-old man who was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2013.

Martin was released in 2016 after serving only three years.
