On Monday, Mobile’s NBC 15 reported a Fourth of July rally at USS Alabama proposed by former President Donald Trump was nixed after it was determined to be “a partisan political event.”

Speculation had been rampant that Gov. Kay Ivey and her staff may have played a role in the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park commission’s decision to deny Trump the opportunity to host an event at the park.

Through a spokeswoman, Ivey denied having played a role in the USS Alabama decision. However, the Governor’s office acknowledged advising the commission to seek an Attorney General’s opinion, which was also reported by NBC 15.

“Governor Ivey did not get involved to prevent a Trump rally at the USS Alabama,” Ivey spokeswoman Gina Maiola told Yellowhammer News in a statement. “She is fully supportive of President Trump and worked closely with him as governor and appreciated his support of our state. The battleship commissioners approached our office out of concern of a statute that says you cannot use state property for political purposes. The governor and her team expressed that that law would not bar this event from happening and encouraged them to seek an opinion from the Attorney General.”
