Zeke Smith announced as Chairman of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Board

On Friday, the Board of Directors of the State of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame announced Zeke Smith has been selected to replace Edgar Welden as Chairman of the Board. Welden, who served as Chairman for over 20 years, will serve as Board Chairman Emeritus.

I am honored to serve with our staff and board to continue building on the legacy of leadership Edgar provided, said Smith. He helped establish the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame as one of the finest sports halls of fame in the country.

Smith enjoyed a career of over 40 years with the Alabama Power Company, retiring in 2023 as Executive Vice President of External Affairs. He also served as Chairman of the Alabama Power Foundation’s Board of Directors. Additionally, throughout his career he served on the boards of the Business Council of Alabama and the Birmingham Business Alliance. 

In addition, Smith is Chairman of the Alabama State Port Authority Board of Directors, and formerly served on the Samford University Board of Trustees. In past service to the state, he was appointed as a member of the Alabama Innovation Commission and President of the Commission Advisory Council. Smith was also appointed to the Alabama Workforce Council serving as chairman. Smith was inducted into the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame in 2019.

Smith and his wife, Darlene, have three children and seven grandchildren. He also serves on the Bryant-Jordan Foundation Board, the Auburn University McCrary Institute Advisory Council, and the Auburn University Board of Trustees.
