(Video) Saban’s explanation for why he ‘refused’ to give his daughter away at her wedding is great

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Nick Saban’s not known for being the most sentimental guy in the world, but an inside look at his daughter Kristen’s wedding over the weekend reveals a softer side of the legendary coach.

In addition to walking his daughter down the aisle and cutting a rug at her reception, Saban was also called upon to make a speech at the reception. He delivered in a big way, even managing to slip in a reference to his hard-nosed, defensive coaching style.

“I guess I’m supposed to give a speech up here tonight to give my daughter away,” he said. “But if you know me, I don’t give anything away. We don’t give any points away. I don’t give any shots away on the golf course. I still have my high school jersey, I don’t give anything away.”

At that point, it may have been hard to figure out where the coach was going. Was he planning to force the couple to live in his basement?

“But, you know, I don’t really look at this as giving something away,” he explained. “I really feel like we’re not giving our daughter away, we’re actually gaining a son. And someone that we’re very proud to have be a part of our family.”

Well played, coach.
