A University of Alabama doctoral student has been detained by federal immigration authorities, according to statements released by the university and reports from various news outlets.
The student, identified by the university’s student newspaper, The Crimson White, as Iranian national Alireza Doroudi, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Tuesday. Doroudi holds a student visa, and it remains unclear what charges, if any, he is facing.

In a statement released Wednesday, the University of Alabama confirmed the incident but provided limited details.
“The University of Alabama recently learned that a doctoral student has been detained off campus by federal immigration authorities. Federal privacy laws limit what can be shared about an individual student,” the university said.
Doroudi’s case comes amid a broader immigration enforcement effort targeting foreign students. Various news outlets report that several international students across the country have been detained in recent weeks, many of whom were allegedly involved in pro-Palestinian activism.
However, it has not been confirmed whether Doroudi’s detainment is connected to any political activity.
The university has not released additional information, citing federal privacy regulations.
