The Supreme Court overturned the 40-year-old Chevron decision, which enabled federal agencies to control regulation over a wide range of government functions, often leading to an overreach of bureaucratic power without adequate legislative or judicial checks. In the majority ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts said clearly that courts must now independently judge agency actions.
Alabama leaders are praising the decision as a major kenneling of the bureaucratic state.
The Court ruled in both Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless v. Department of Commerce that regulatory agencies can add new interpretations to vague legislation. This effectively overturns the 1984 Chevron v. National Resources Defense Council case that extended the power of the Washington D.C. bureaucracy.
