The U.S. Senate is scheduled to hold a procedural vote this evening on legislation that bans federally funded schools from permitting transgender individuals to play in girls’ or women’s sports.

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, sponsored and introduced by U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, aims to ensure the safety of biological female athletes across the country in all levels of competition by banning transgender individuals from taking the field against them.

Additionally, the bill specifies that Title IX provisions treat gender as “recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”

The Senator has spoken previously about the harm of allowing transgender athletes to compete against girls or women.

“Forcing females to compete against males destroys the playing field — the level playing field — created by law,” Tuberville (R-Auburn) said.

“It would exclude young women from the safety and fairness that they deserve. Title IX’s success would be undone if this continues to happen. And, that success that Title IX is and has [is] undeniable. Since its enactment, participation in female sports has increased by more than 600 percent.”

“Title IX has afforded many women the opportunity to receive athletic scholarships and become our engineers, our doctors, our lawyers, our leaders — without the burden of college debt.

On Monday, Tuberville announced that the upper chamber would be voting on his legislation tonight and posed a simple question for Senate Democrats.

Tuberville also recently praised President Donald Trump for signing an Executive Order to protect women’s sports and restore Title IX protections. Despite the EO, Tuberville wants the legislation enshrined so that it can’t be rescinded by a different president.

Tuberville’s fellow Alabamian, U.S. Senator Katie Britt, is co-sponsoring the legislation.
