U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has commented on the ongoing vote by employees of Amazon’s Bessemer fulfillment center to form a union or not.
President Joe Biden on Sunday evening released a video in support of the unionization push, which is being spearheaded by the New York City-based Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU).
In doing so, Biden joined the likes of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams and Hollywood activist Danny Glover in publicly backing the Alabama unionization effort.
This came after Reuters reported last month that union leaders have been directly engaged with the Biden White House regarding the union vote in Bessemer.
On a phone call this week, Tuberville decried Biden’s interference in Amazon’s Bessemer team members making the best possible decision for themselves and their families.
“I don’t think Alabamians need President Biden weighing in on this issue and trying to tip the scales in favor of one side or the other,” said Alabama’s freshman senator.
“Alabama is a right to work state, which is why we have a growing economy that attracts great companies to our state,” Tuberville continued. “But importantly, right to work laws protect workers and give them the choice to form a union or not. That’s what this vote’s about.”
He concluded, “President Biden should not have stepped in on this by trying to convince people to vote for a union. These employees in Alabama don’t need Hollywood elites or the federal government telling Alabama workers what to do.”
