U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) and Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) are lauding the U.S. Department of Justice for arresting former CNN anchor Don Lemon.

Lemon was arrested Friday for his part in a recent protest by left-wing activists during a church service in Minneapolis. The justice department charged Lemon and three others with civil rights crimes for disrupting a worship service.

“Don Lemon knowingly disrupted an active church service, intimidating churchgoers seeking to worship in peace and likely violating the FACE Act,” Britt said Friday on X. “He and the other agitators should be held accountable for this cowardly ambush on people of faith.”

The FACE Act is a federal law that prohibits the use of force, intimidation, or obstruction to deliberately “injure, intimidate, or interfere” with operations at an abortion facility or an individual’s ability to exercise their right to religious freedom at a place of worship.

Tuberville responded to a comment from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on X, saying that Lemon needs to go to jail for his actions.

“What a joke. Democrats weaponized the DOJ to go after a former President on made-up charges, bullied companies into silencing and debanking conservatives, and threw anyone in jail who was even near the Capitol on January 6th,” Tuberville said. “Don Lemon interrupted a church service….violating the congregants’ Constitutional rights to worship freely. He and everyone else involved NEEDS TO GO TO JAIL.”

Abbe Lowell, a lawyer for Lemon, called the arrest an attack on the first amendment.

“This unprecedented attack on the first amendment and transparent attempt to distract attention from the many crises facing this administration will not stand,” Lowell said. “Don will fight these charges vigorously and thoroughly in court.”
