Trump outraises Biden by more than $60 million in single month

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has seen an avalanche of donations in his bid to retake the White House in 2024. According to campaign finance reports, in May alone, he raised $60 million more than President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign.

The windfall of contributions were thanks in large part to Trump’s “hush money” trial verdict was delivered in New York. Trump’s campaign said that it received over $50 million in donations the day after the trial concluded.

The news represents a major problem for the Biden Administration’s reelection efforts. The President, who has in recent months enjoyed a higher rate and amount of donations than Trump, looks to be facing a significant drop in his cash advantage.

The change began in April when Trump outraised Biden with $76 million to the incumbent’s $51 million. In the month of May, Trump was even more successful, raising $141 million to Biden’s $85 million. During the same time frame, the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Trump campaign received a total of 2 million donations — 25% of which were first time donors.

One of the most significant contributions by far came from billionaire Timothy Mellon. Mellon donated $50 million to a Trump aligned super PAC immediately following the verdict.

Sean Spicer, former White House press secretary and communications director, put the inflow of contributions for Trump into perspective:

Additionally, FEC filings for May also indicate that Trump and the RNC had $171 million in cash on hand, compared to $157 million for Biden and the Democratic National Committee.
