The time a Brit went to the Iron Bowl and got his mind blown

So this video is a couple of years old, but it resurfaced over the weekend when nationally-syndicated talk radio firebrand Michael Berry posted it on his Facebook page with the caption “This is how a Brit reacts to seeing American Collegiate Football for the 1st time.”

In the video, English comedian and actor Stephen Fry (V for Vendetta, Sherlock Holmes, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug) attends the Iron Bowl in Auburn and documents his experience for English television.

He’s clearly blown away.

“This fixture has the scale, intensity and hoopla of a grand national final, but is in reality nothing more than a local derby between amateur students,” Fry explains to his British audience. “Only in America.”

Fry stood in awe of the pageantry and sheer scale of the event.

“I really don’t know if anything sums up America better,” Fry said. “It’s simultaneously preposterous, incredibly laughable, impressive, charming, ridiculous, expensive, overpopulated — wonderful, American.”

He even shed a tear as the Auburn band finished up playing “God Bless America.”
