Thomas Govan, President Donald Trump’s nominee to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, is now pending confirmation by the full U.S. Senate after advancing out of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The committee voted during an executive business meeting in Washington, D.C. to move Govan’s nomination forward, sending it to the Senate floor for final consideration. Govan’s nomination by President Trump was first announced by the White House in October.

Govan is a career prosecutor who has served as chief of the Criminal Trials Division in the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. He previously worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Middle District and is also an officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserve JAG Corps. In 2024, he ran statewide for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals.

Alabama U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery), a member of the Judiciary Committee, voiced support for Govan following the committee vote.

“I am also proud to have vote[d] to advance the nomination of one of Alabama’s very own, Thomas Govan. His expertise, professionalism, and deep knowledge of the legal system provide him with an incredible foundation on which to serve the Middle District of Alabama,” said Britt. “I applaud President Trump’s nomination and am eager to see him confirmed soon.”

President Trump nominated Govan to serve a four-year term as the Middle District’s top federal prosecutor, subject to Senate confirmation.
