This Alabama bakery is icing on the cake for a relationship between mother and son

Omar Young grew up loving his mother’s cakes. He never thought he would be in the business of making them.

“I got into baking by trying to lend a hand to my mom,” he said. “I never cracked an egg before.”

Mary Young founded My Sweetheart Bakery in Fairfield before handing the business over to her son. Mary started making cakes in her Easy-Bake Oven as a little girl and developed her talent as a baker of classic Southern cakes.

“It was just natural for me; baking all the time,” she said.

Omar had to learn to bake his first cake with Mary walking him through it over the phone so the bakery could fill a big order.

Mary said her son picked up baking quickly and he has a knack for adding creativity to recipes.

In addition to selling from their own locations, My Sweetheart Bakery partners with Birmingham area coffee shops, restaurants and food trucks that carry their cakes.
