These countries are Alabama’s most important trade partners

Analysts from the website Business Insider compiled lists of the most significant export and import partners for every state in the country. Using the U.S. Census Bureau’s annual report on international trade, Business Insider went state by state to find the biggest trade partners by dollar value of goods imported and exported in 2014.

Using the results, Insider made maps to chart the findings.

On the import side, China and Canada are the most common partners, while Alabama takes in most of its imported goods from South Korea. It should be noted, that South Korea is home to one of Alabama’s biggest suppliers of manufacturing jobs: Hyundai.

The Korean auto company’s manufacturing facility in Montgomery employs more than 3,000 workers, with an estimated 4,000 more at the 30 suppliers that have located in Montgomery County alone.

As for exports, a decisive majority of states, including Alabama, send goods north of the border to Canada. States along the nation’s southern border send the most goods down to Mexico.
