The crew of the USS Alabama, a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine currently stationed in Washington, had a message for Auburn University this week.
“1985 was a great year. Bo Jackson won the Heisman and the USS Alabama was commissioned. And for over 31 years, she’s been defending America’s freedom from under the sea. To all the fans back in Auburn, thank you for your continued support for men and women in uniform. And one more thing: War Eagle!”
The ship doesn’t just share a name with the state, it also shares a motto: Audemus Jura Nostra Defendere, “We dare to defend our rights.” The USS Alabama has defended the U.S. since 1984, completing dozens of strategic deterrent patrols in the Pacific.
The Alabama is also the setting for the 1995 film Crimson Tide, starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington.
