U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) made it clear this week that she’s not happy with the bill that passed in the U.S. Senate to open up the federal government.

“This so-called ‘deal’ is nothing more than empty promises,” Sewell said. “I am a HELL NO on any bill that raises health care costs for millions of Americans.”

On Monday, the Senate approved a government funding measure by a 60-40 vote, with eight members of the Senate Democratic caucus crossing over to join a unified GOP conference minus one.

The U.S. House is expected to vote on the legislation Wednesday, which if passed and signed by President Donald Trump will end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Sewell posted a video to her social media, explaining why she still doesn’t want to vote to open up the government, saying she wanted the package to include funding for Obamacare subsides that expire at the end of this year.

“I’ve been clear from the very beginning that I will not support a budget that raises health care costs for millions of Americans,” she said. “This so called deal is not a deal, in my opinion, it’s an empty promise from the Republicans to help solve a health care crisis that they caused. It does nothing to extend ACA tax credits that help my constituents afford health care. To me, it is nothing more than empty promise. That’s why I will be voting no when it comes up for a vote in the House.”

The congresswoman also criticized her Democratic colleagues in the Senate who voted for the bill.

“Some of my Democratic colleagues in the Senate think that Republicans are open to negotiating on health care once the government reopens. I don’t trust it,” she argued. “I don’t trust them, but here’s what I do know, if Republicans don’t hold up to their end of the bargain, they will be responsible for skyrocketing healthcare premiums and costs for millions of Americans. We have to hold them accountable.”

The U.S. Senate-passed CR ensures full-year military funding, a massive priority for Alabama, while keeping critical operations at agencies funded and ensuring federal workers receive back pay.
