U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) thinks the main reason Congress has had trouble passing a Continuing Resolution to fund the government is because of billionaire Elon Musk.
Musk, renown entrepreneur and owner of the social media platform X, came out strongly against the CR that was introduced by House leadership earlier this week, criticizing it for including too much unnecessary spending.
The U.S. faces a possible government shutdown that could begin at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, if Congress doesn’t pass some kind of deal.

Musk, alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, has been charged by President-elect Donald Trump with heading his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The spending bill seems to be the first test of what Musk will be able to accomplish in his new position.
“If Trump and Musk shut down the government,” Sewell said. “I will stay in Washington for as long as it takes to get it reopened and restore critical services for Alabama families.”
