A Sylacauga Walmart associate is being recognized as a hero after saving the life of a fellow referee who collapsed during a high school football game Friday night.

According to WBRC, officials Lew Murphy and Joey Shelnutt were working the Sylacauga vs. Central Coosa matchup when Shelnutt suddenly collapsed on the field. Murphy immediately rushed to perform CPR, resuscitating him twice, witnesses said.

Murphy, an associate at Walmart in Sylacauga, is being praised for his life-saving actions. In a Facebook post, the store called Murphy a “shining example” of its values of service, respect, excellence, and integrity.

“Lew’s quick action, steady leadership, and courage under pressure saved Joey’s life — not once, but twice,” Walmart wrote. “We are incredibly proud to call Lew part of our Walmart family. Please join us in celebrating his heroism and keeping Joey Shelnutt in our thoughts and prayers as he continues to recover.”
