Dale Strong helps veteran John McCulloch obtain long-delayed Purple Heart

In February 2007, Sgt. John McCulloch of Huntsville was on patrol in northern Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated, wounding him.

Today, McCulloch, who has long-term health issues from the explosion, is the recipient of the Purple Heart.

However, the honor was not awarded for nearly two decades.

After years of reaching out to officials and providing the necessary information didn’t result in the government awarding him the medal, McCulloch approached U.S. Rep. Dale W. Strong for help.

“I tried on my own for five years, and even with all the proper documentation, I couldn’t get anyone to do anything, so I went to Congressman Strong,” said McCulloch.

Upon learning of McCulloch’s case, Strong (R-Huntsville) was able to obtain the Purple Heart through the Awards and Decorations Branch of the Army Human Resources Command.

The congressman presented the Purple Heart to McCulloch at his Fifth Congressional District office in Huntsville.

“I’m proud to secure this well-deserved Purple Heart for Sergeant McCulloch,” Strong said. “Our country should cherish its wounded veterans, and this decoration ensures that sacrifices in battle are not forgotten back home.

“Americans around the country should be thankful for the sacrifice of men like Sergeant McCulloch.”

Anyone who needs help obtaining military records, assistance with the Department of Veterans Affairs, or any military service-related casework should contact Strong’s office at 256-551-0190.
