Northwest Alabama elected official, State Rep. Tracy Estes (R-Winfield), was arrested by the Marion County Sheriffs Office on Friday night on a third-degree domestic violence charge and booked into the Marion County Jail.

According to WBRC, John “Tracy” Estes, 57, was the subject of a protective order successfully filed by his wife, two hours before he was arrested on the domestic violence charge. The protective order was filed by Estes’ wife, saying that she was in danger and that Estes had verbally threatened to hurt her on multiple occasions. One situation listed in the order recounted Estes beating on the door of a bedroom inside their home for more than two hours.

The protective order signed by a Marion County Circuit Court judge prohibited Estes from coming within 300 feet of their home and required him to surrender any firearms he owns to law enforcement.

Estes is in his second term in the Alabama House representing the 17th District, which includes parts of Lamar, Marion and Winston Counties.

After his arrest was made public, Alabama Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter said, “I’m aware of the situation concerning Rep. Estes and have full confidence that our justice system will determine an appropriate course of action.”

“Alabamians deserve the very best from their elected officials, and it’s my expectation that House Members are beyond reproach in both their professional and personal lives,” Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) said.

As of Monday morning, Estes has not made a statement to the media or the public.
