‘Stand on Christ the Risen Rock’ — Alabama faith leader and family offer encouraging message

Micah McElveen, founder and CEO of Sylacauga-based Vapor Ministries, joined with his family in offering an encouraging Easter message.

McElveen leads Vapor Ministries which, according to its stated mission, seeks to “establish sustainable centers for alleviating poverty and multiplying disciples in third-world environments.” Its name is inspired by a verse in Psalm 39: “Surely all people, even those who seem secure, are nothing but vapor.”

The Vapor Ministries site outlines McElveen’s journey:

In 1995, Micah broke his neck in a near-fatal surfing accident. During the intense recovery period that followed, God began to reshape Micah and taught him that life is but a vapor. Not able to play football, he picked up soccer and went on to play at bible college, where he earned a degree in Intercultural Studies. While there he discovered the power of leveraging sports to advance the gospel and met his bride, Audrey. In graduate school, he traveled to Africa and was broken by the extreme poverty he encountered. Awakened by the experience and moved to respond, a vision to alleviate poverty and multiply disciples formed.

Vapor Ministries now has five centers – three in Africa and two in Haiti – with 480 staff members.
