The crew of the USS Alabama, a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine currently stationed in Washington, had a message for the University of Alabama this week.

“Just like the Crimson Tide, our awesome offensive and defensive capabilities make us the best in the world,” one of the sub’s officers declared in a video posted on the UA Facebook page. “So to all the fans back in Alabama, we’d like to say, ‘Go Bama — Roll Tide!’

The ship doesn’t just share a name with the state, it also shares a motto: Audemus Jura Nostra Defendere, “We dare to defend our rights.” The USS Alabama has defended the U.S. since 1984, completing dozens of strategic deterrent patrols in the Pacific.

The Alabama is also the setting for the 1995 film Crimson Tide, starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington.
