Spectrum launches Alabama cable news channel, website

Charter Communications’ Spectrum News has launched a 24/7 Alabama channel on cable channel 1 for Spectrum customers, with brief headline updates and 24/7 weather coverage, the company said.

The service is accessible to Spectrum customers via the Spectrum News app and on devices such as Roku and Apple TV.

While the launch adds another outlet to Alabama’s media landscape, access is limited to Spectrum subscribers — it is not an over-the-air broadcast channel.

Spectrum has also stood up an Alabama landing page with live video and state-focused sections for news, politics and weather.

The Alabama network is part of a larger national footprint.

Spectrum News operates more than 30 local and regional channels in markets including New York City, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Wisconsin and others.

Governor Kay Ivey praised Spectrum for starting the Alabama-focused broadcast.

“We welcome the launch of Spectrum News in Alabama,” Ivey said in a statement.

“In bringing their programming here, Spectrum News will support coverage of the local stories that matter most to communities across Alabama through the lenses of journalists and reporters living here.”

Jasmine Redus of Huntsville has been named Executive Producer for the network.

Spectrum said its Alabama newsroom will include in-state journalists and emphasized localized coverage in cities such as Birmingham, Montgomery, Decatur and Auburn.
