According to a recent contract between Amwaste and the Cahaba Solid Waste Disposal Authority, the garbage rate for the areas served by the private business will soon undergo a 64-cent monthly increase.

Amwaste’s contract with the Birmingham-based entity includes an annual increase of up to 5% based on the price index. In 2023, they were granted a 4.6% increase.

“Each city will be responsible for their own 4.6%, so how they accommodate that, how they arrive at that, would be different for Hoover,” Blake Miller, chairman of the Cahaba Solid Waste Disposal Authority, told WBRC6. “All that comes from Hoover’s general fund, so there should not be any kind of increase per resident. Other cities do it a little bit differently.”

The Cahaba Solid Waste Disposal Authority seeks to combine resources and secure the best garbage service options. The member cities are: Trussville, Pelham, Vestavia Hills, Fultondale, Hoover, and Birmingham. Per the contract, each city in the authority is individually responsible for paying the increase.
