Officials say a social media threat has prompted the closure of schools in an Alabama city and a neighboring district in Georgia.

News outlets reported that Eufaula City Schools are closed Thursday because of the threat. The school district said on its website that law enforcement is investigating the threat but classes were canceled to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Quitman County Schools in neighboring Georgia also are closed because of the threat.

The Wallace Community College Sparks Campus in Eufaula was also closed because of the threat.

Neither school officials nor Eufaula police explained the nature of the threat.
