Shelby to tour every Alabama county, as he has every year for 3 decades

WASHINGTON — Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) announced Monday morning that he will once again visit each of Alabama’s 67 counties during his annual tour.

“Throughout my time in the United States Senate, I have made it a top priority to visit all 67 counties in Alabama every year,” Shelby said in the release. “The focus of my statewide travel will be to hear from my constituents about the impact of the Obama Administration’s policies on middle class families, job creation, and economic growth. I believe these visits are an excellent opportunity for us to discuss the important issues currently facing our state and nation.”

In 2013, the senator held his 1,800th town hall meeting. “While new media is a useful tool for communication,” Sen. Shelby said, “nothing can replace the value gained by interacting face-to-face with those whom I represent.”

Sen. Shelby has kept the tradition since being elected to the US Senate in 1987, and holds that he will continue to do so as long as he remains in office.

“I’ve always thought it was a question of accountability that someone that’s elected… to higher office, that they owe the people, that they’re accountable,” Shelby said. “They shouldn’t just come around during an election year.”
