Shelby notches $3.7M in FAA grants for Alabama airports

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $3.7 million in Federal Aviation Administration grants to four Alabama airports for infrastructure upgrades, U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Tuscaloosa) announced Friday.

In a statement announcing the grant award, Shelby, vice chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the grants would bolster the respective airports’ growth outlook.

“This $3.69 million in FAA funding will improve the overall functionality and safety of each of these Alabama airports, setting them up for further growth and success down the line,” said Shelby in a release. “By improving infrastructure and updating master plans, these four local and regional airports stand to add even more economic value to their respective communities and the state at large.”

The grants were administered through the Fiscal Year 2022 Airport Improvement Program. The program was funded in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2022.

The grants were awarded to:

Huntsville International Airport — Carl T. Jones Field: $1,389,343 to rehabilitate an access road
Northwest Alabama Regional Airport in Muscle Shoals — $1,111,205 to reconstruct runway lighting
Tuscaloosa National Airport — $1,054,163 to reconstruct an apron
St. Elmo Airport — $134,999 to update the airport master plan
