Shelby County District Attorney Robert E. Owens, Jr. is close to jumping into the Alabama Sixth Congressional District race, according to multiple sources close to the popular DA.

“He’s running,” a legislator told Yellowhammer Wednesday evening. “He’s doing everything you’re supposed to do, talking to all the people you’re supposed to talk to.”

Calls to Owens’ office were not immediately returned Wednesday evening as it was after regular operating hours.

Owens would be a strong candidate, particularly in Shelby County, which makes up a large chunk of the southern portion of the Sixth District. He would likely have the behind-the-scenes support of the Shelby County political establishment.

The question is, can he raise the money to be competitive? Anything short of a million dollars is going to make it tough to compete.

We’ll have an update as soon as we’re able to speak with Owens.
