Several high-ranking Republican officials spoke at a rally on Halloween in Madison County putting forth the message that North Alabama needs to stay red.
The rally was for GOP U.S. Senate nominee Katie Britt at Black Patch Distillery, and an effort to energize the GOP base in the area. There have been concerns the Huntsville and Madison areas might turn blue in the next few years.
While speaking to the crowd that day, State Sen. Majority Leader Clay Scofield reminded people why Democratic control of federal and state offices would be a disaster for the Yellowhammer State.
“Folks, it’s Halloween, and I can’t think of anything scarier than four more years of the Democrats running our country,” Scofield said.
The Alabama lawmaker reminded the voters how bad things were under Democratic leadership before Republicans took control in the state.
“I came in in 2010,” he said, “the first time the Republican Party had taken over from the Democrats, and I can’t tell you how bad of shape our state was in. We were in terrible shape financially. Our ethics laws were just about nonexistent. Economically we weren’t doing well, and our schools certainly we’re doing well. Our schools were not prioritized whatsoever.”
Scofield pointed to the progress Alabama has made over the past decade and why that’s the main reason voters need to keep reelecting Republicans to office in the state.
“I can’t explain how hard we have worked and fought to make Alabama a better place to live, work, do business, and go to school,” he argued, “and that is because of Republican leadership. Supermajorities in both the House and Senate working together with the governor as a team to improve our state. Why would we backup on that? Why in the world would we choose to back up?”
He concluded by highlighting those Republicans running for office in North Alabama and how much they are still needed in the state legislature.
“So I would encourage you please we need these guys back,” he declared. “We need their leadership to continue for us in North Alabama. The momentum is on our side in Madison county and it’s because of leadership like this. So please get on the phone, go door to door, whatever you can do to make sure that Tom Butler and Sam Givhan come back to the State Senate.”
