WASHINGTON, D.C. — In an interview with The Montgomery Advertiser on Wednesday, Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL2) declared her support for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump, but offered the candidate some advice regarding his tone and message.
“The temperament in which he is working under, I would suggest, needs to be a little more presidential,” she said.
Roby also expressed hope that the New York billionaire’s future policy proposals would be presented with more specifics.
“The policy positions that Mr. Trump is taking right now, I think we need to see a little bit more depth, particularly as it relates to issues important to conservatives, and conservatives in the state of Alabama,” she said. “We have to return to constitutional order in this country. I want to hear from [Trump] that he’s committed to doing that, to returning to what our forefathers envisioned for this country under our constitution.”
Many Republicans have been very hesitant to outspokenly back their nominee, and some have even started to back away from Trump in light of recent polling data. The Real Clear Politics average shows Clinton ahead of Trump by more than six points nationally, and an ABC News/Washington Post poll released over the weekend shows Clinton ahead by fourteen points.
Still, pro-Trump forces led by Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) are pushing party leaders and rank-and-file members to get on the “Trump Train”.

“Let me give advice to my Republican colleagues,” Sessions said recently. “They need to look at the election returns. They need to understand that the American people are not happy with the gridlock in America.”
Trump is set to be formally selected as the Republican nominee on July 18 at the party’s convention in Cleveland, Ohio.
