Republican Leigh Hulsey announces Alabama House District 73 candidacy

Helena Councilwoman Leigh Hulsey on Monday announced a Republican bid for the vacant Alabama House of Representatives District 73 seat.

This comes after a special election was set last week by Governor Kay Ivey. This seat was held by State Rep. Matt Fridy (R-Montevallo), who was elected to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals on November 3.

The special election in HD 73, which represents portions of Shelby County, will coincide with the special election to fill the vacant seat in Senate District 14, which encompasses parts of Shelby, Bibb, Chilton, Jefferson and Hale Counties.

Hulsey currently serves as council president pro tem for the City of Helena. She has served on the city council since 2008. Hulsey also serves as the council liaison for Helena’s parks and recreation department and police department. In addition to her experience on the city council, Hulsey is the owner of CrossFit Alabaster.

“I will use my conservative, pro-business values to bring about real change to our state and District 73,” Hulsey said in a statement.

If elected, she would represent Alabaster, Helena, Montevallo and Pelham in the House.

The special primary election for HD 73 will be Tuesday, March 30.
