Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) on Wednesday reportedly said that he will endorse former Attorney General Jeff Sessions if he chooses to run for his old Alabama Senate seat this cycle.

“A lot of indications point to him running but he hasn’t said unequivocally,” Shelby added, per Bloomberg.

Alabama’s senior senator also reportedly downplayed concerns that President Donald Trump would vocally oppose a Sessions candidacy.

“[Sessions has] always endorsed me. He’s my friend,” Shelby remarked.

Sessions has until Friday, November 8 to qualify for Alabama’s 2020 Republican Senate primary.

Recent polls have consistently shown former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville holding a solid double-digit lead in the race.

Other candidates who have already qualified include Congressman Bradley Byrne (AL-01), Secretary of State John Merrill and State Rep. Arnold Mooney (R-Indian Springs).

Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore has announced his candidacy but has yet to qualify.
