Hospitals across Alabama continue to play an invaluable role in the state’s positive economic outlook, according to a report from the Alabama Hospital Association. The organization revealed Tuesday that Alabama hospitals not only contribute $25 billion annually to the state economy but also support over 143,000 jobs.

“Alabama hospitals are the backbone of our communities, ensuring access to high-quality care while also driving economic growth,” said President of the Alabama Hospital Association, Donald E. Williamson, MD. “Beyond patient care, hospitals are committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the communities they serve, strengthening local economies, and investing in the overall quality of life for all residents.”

Laura Grill, President and CEO of East Alabama Health and Chairman of the Alabama Hospital Association Board of Trustees, also noted the importance of the 114 hospitals located throughout the state.

Out of the more than 143,000 jobs supported, 77,557 employees are directly working in hospitals, generating a $10.4 billion labor impact.

In 2023, hospitals across the state cared for Alabamians through 564,939 inpatient stays, 6,436,331 outpatient visits, and 2,193,297 emergency room visits—providing life-saving care 24 hours a day.
