Rep. Terri Sewell announced she secured additional funding to improve school security.

Six public high schools in Choctaw, Greene, Marengo, and Sumter counties will split a $1.2 million check that Sewell delivered personally last week that will improve security, training, and knowledge across the campuses.

Sewell said that the money came from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Stop School Violence program.

“I think much of the violence we see in our schools is because we haven’t taught our children how to do conflict resolutions that doesn’t involving fighting, and I am excited today because, while I don’t have children of my own, I have 100,000 children in my district that are my children and our children and I think it’s real important,” Sewell said.

Sewell also reportedly helped secure funding this week for the University of Alabama’s nursing school, with a $3.5 million federal check courtesy of the U.S. Department of Labor through its Employment and Training Administration’s Nursing Expansion Grant Program to “support UA’s goal of growing and diversifying Alabama’s nursing workforce.”
