A bill introduced by U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) would send newly hired Internal Revenue Service agents to assist with border security operations.

The nation’s chief tax collection agency is set to receive $80 billion over the course of a decade under the recently signed Inflation Reduction Act, which will pave way for the hiring of 87,000 more enforcement agents.

Moore’s bill would require new IRS agents to complete a 30-day detail at the border to support Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In announcing the legislation, Moore suggested the federal government prioritize matters related to border security rather than bolstering the IRS.

“The American people are worried about their families’ future and safety, but the only solutions Democrats have to offer them are bureaucracy and Big Brother,” he said. “Instead of spending billions to come after taxpayers, Washington should take action to stop the influx of drugs and crime overwhelming our borders.”

As part of former President Donald Trump’s 2019 national emergency proclamation, the Department of Homeland Security established a volunteer force to assist with the mass influx of illegal immigrants.

The DHS Volunteer Force has developed a government-wide recruitment and application process, which extends to the IRS.

U.S. Reps. Randy Weber (R-Texas), Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), Jake Ellzey (R-Texas), and Jody Hice (R-Ga.) joined Moore as original cosponsors of the legislation.
