Alabama is something of a Petri dish for outlandish politicians, bizarre campaign moments and scratch-your-head political theater. Sometimes it seems like the Yellowhammer State was created just to be the perfect environment in which to grow the most wacky, over-the-top characters imaginable.
A state representative declaring men should be able to marry mules? We’ve got one.
A state senator defending his mother’s honor on the senate floor by punching one of his colleagues in the face? Definitely had one of those, too.
The Internet’s most famous candidate-turned-viral-video star? Oh yea, he’s an Alabamian.
A Congressional candidate who records campaign videos while sitting on the toilet? Of course.
So it was no surprise, then, when it came to our attention that an Alabama state senate candidate is leaving campaign materials at houses around his district encouraging voters to “put on (their) best underwear.” That seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to expect of the voters, if you ask me.
“The details of image were important to my Grannie,” Democratic state senate candidate Horace Clemmons explains on a campaign flyer (see below). “If we were going out she always asked, ‘Do you have on your best underwear?’ The family image was at stake. We must take the same level or pride in Alabama. Let’s put on our best underwear. We all own a part of this issue.”
Clemmons is running in Senate District 8 against Republican businessman Steve Livingston, who won the GOP primary and should easily win the General Election tomorrow, too.
Livingston’s conservative credentials are probably more in line with the district he is vying to represent, but we don’t have much information on how clean his underwear is.
Keep that in mind if you live up in northeast Alabama and plan to go to the polls tomorrow.
