Pro-Gun New Hampshire, an organization for Granite State Second Amendment champions, is warning New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie against signing four gun control measures into law.

“There are four horrific gun bills sitting on Chris Christie’s desk right now.  What he does with them will tell Granite Staters everything they need to know about who Chris Christie really is.  Please contact him, tell him you’re watching with 2016 in mind, and tell him you want to see him veto these bills”

The four bills include a ban on a .50 caliber rifle, requiring encoding of firearm purchases on a driver’s license or photo ID, requiring gun owners to complete a safety course, banning those on the federal terrorist watch list from purchasing guns and requiring law enforcement agencies to report on lost, stolen or discarded guns to federal databases.

Christie has not signaled what he might do on the particular pieces of legislation, but in April the Republican governor announced he supported expanded background checks for gun purchases and a ban on particular rifles.

Signing any of these bills in blue New Jersey will only enhance his standing for reelection, but the inverse is true with national Republicans in early presidential primary states.

That’s why it seems most plausible that Christie will split the difference, by vetoing certain measures — the encoding of firearm permits on a driver’s license — but supporting others, like the terrorist watch list ban.  He can chest-thump he made the decisions based on principle, and once again tell his detractors to . . . ya know.

Any 2016 path for Christie must go through New Hampshire, so this group’s reaction is worth monitoring.

“Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, is most likely going to run.  If you want to know what kind of president he’d be, watch what he does as governor,” the group says.
