President Trump halts NPR funding – Dale Strong says its time to make it law

U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) praised President Donald Trump’s latest Executive Order that pauses federal government funding of National Public Radio (NPR), but once again called on his colleagues to make it law.

Trump’s order instructs the Corporation of Public Broadcasting (CPB) and all executive departments and agencies to cease Federal funding for NPR and PBS.

“Government funding of news media in this environment is not only outdated and unnecessary but corrosive to the appearance of journalistic independence,” the order states.

“At the very least, Americans have the right to expect that if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage. No media outlet has a constitutional right to taxpayer subsidies, and the Government is entitled to determine which categories of activities to subsidize.”

Strong said he supports the move, but also said Congress needs his No More Funding for NPR Act of 2025 to make it permanent.

“I look forward to working with [the President] and my [House GOP] colleagues to codify this executive order into law,” Strong said. “My bill, the No More Funding for NPR Act, is common sense. Hard-earned taxpayer dollars should not be used to subsidize media that undermines the values and beliefs of everyday Americans.”

Strong introduced the No More Funding for NPR Act of 2025 Friday that would prevent taxpayer dollars from going to the organization.

The two-page bill says, “After the date of the enactment of this Act, no Federal funds may, directly or indirectly, be made available to or used to support an organization… including through the payment of dues to or the purchase of programming from such organization by a public broadcast station using Federal funds received by such station.”

According to Strong’s press release at the time he introduced the bill, he believes they should stop receiving taxpayer funds because “despite its mandate to create a more informed public, Congressional oversight and investigations have shown that NPR consistently skews reporting to favor liberal opinions, failing to deliver objective and unbiased reporting for the American people.”
